BOUNTIFUL HARVEST
SAINT JOHN VALLEY, PRESQUE ISLE, LIMESTONE FORT KENT, CANADIAN BORDER
A claim on the largest county in the state – or east of the Mississippi River, for that matter – Aroostook, also known to locals as The County, holds a fascination for outdoor enthusiasts. Those welcome to this far-flung part of Maine are seekers of awe-inspiring terrain and the rarest territories.
THE WILD GRANDEUR OF THE COUNTY
Make no mistake, North Maine Woods provides an unparalleled back woods experience. Notable trips include the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, a magnificent, 92-mile-long ribbon of lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams winding through the heart of northern Maine’s vast commercial forests. Also, the impressive Northern Forest Canoe Trail can be found here, which begins in Old Forge, New York and ends here, in the town of Fort Kent. At the southeastern end of Aroostook County is the Grand Lake chain of lakes, and further north along the eastern boundary is the St. John River where visitors will encounter world class hunting and fishing and boating opportunities.
ATV trail riders and snowmobile riders love Aroostook Country, as do motorcyclists – Madawaska’s Four Corners Park is a prime destination for those traveling the country’s four corners. Of course, traditional sights and sounds are not far – residents are quick to remind visitors that while they are more than a stone’s throw from the coast, lobster is still readily served.
A FALL & WINTER DESTINATION
Fall foliage in Aroostook County peaks around the last week of September into the first weeks of October. The County offers several driving tours to enjoy beautiful views of rolling hills and spectacular foliage. Winter also draws the adventurous solely for snowmobiling and snowshoeing on the abundant trails – there’s no better place to embrace the height of snow season.
