Seeking the Magic Light

Founded on May 24, 1899, the Portland Camera Club is one of the oldest camera clubs in the United States and was one of the few that encouraged women to join. This year, the Club is celebrating its 125th year as an on-going organization and recently donated its entire historical archives to the Maine Historical Society. Join current Club President Richard Sawyer for a presentation of images that provide a history of members’ styles and techniques over the past twelve decades since the Club’s founding and for a look at the Club’s recently published book, Seeking the Magic Light: A Chronicle of the First Hundred Years of the Portland, Maine Camera Club.

About the presenter: Richard Sawyer has been a member of the Portland Camera Club for over 15 years. He first started making photographic images when he was in high school using film cameras and developing the images in the basement of his parents’ home in Bangor. Eventually, he transitioned to using digital cameras and well as his iPhone. Following his initial career as a teacher and then 38 years in the insurance and financial services profession, he has devoted more time to developing his love of photography, not as a profession but as an avocation.
