About Us

Owner and guide Dugan Murphy is a local historian, an entertainer, and a curious and enthusiastic tour guide. A recipient of Tripadvisor’s 2023 Best of the Best Awards, he is the top-ranked guide in Maine, #2 in New England, #12 nationwide, and in the top 1% of historical tour guides worldwide. Well over 31,000 people have joined him for tours of his hometown!

We’re inspired by the intriguing, surprising, empowering — and too often untold — stories of marginalized communities, peoples, and histories. Each lovingly crafted tour is designed to broaden your sense of what Portland and Maine have been and could be, taking you on a journey beyond what other tours offer. Learn local Black history and many other topics left out of the history books. You’ll leave feeling brighter and more curious about not just Portland, but the wider world.

Scheduled tours are available daily April through November. Private tours are available year-round. Booking in advance is highly recommended, as tours often sell out.

Book online or 207-200-5885. Purchase individual tickets or make it a private tour for your group!

A portion of every ticket sale will help fund the restoration of the Abyssinian Meeting House, Maine’s oldest—and America’s third-oldest—standing Black church.
